How to Create a Professional Resume

17 March, 2012 (22:38) | Uncategorized | By: admin

An application for a job is accompanied with a resume. This is a document that presents all the information about your qualifications, abilities, skills and personal traits in a proper format, such that the reader gets all the required information about you. The main purpose of your curriculum vitae (CV) is to answer the employer’s queries related to the vacant job position. It is thus used for a formal and professional communication. This makes it very important that you have a professional resume. Your CV or resume is your first impression on the prospective employer. It will represent your professional attitude, and not make you look very casual.

Some resumes do not have a standard format throughout. The fonts, spacing, tabs, bullets, etc. keep varying throughout the resume. The quality of paper on which the resume is printed also matters a lot, when it comes to giving a professional look to your resume. The page borders, page background, etc. need to be thought over well before drafting a resume on it.

It is very important to give your resume a professional look. Your resume should present you in such a way that you stand out among others, and make the reader believe that it is beneficial for him/her to choose you over others. The instructions given below will help you draft a professional resume.

HOW TO DRAFT A PROFESSIONAL RESUME?

Resume Basics:

The resume should be divided in various sections to present all the information systematically. Before choosing the style of a resume, and writing a resume, one must know some basics that are a must for a professional look of the resume.

  • The resume should never be handwritten.
  • Use Times New Roman, Verdana, or Arial font, and the font size should be 12.
  • Do not vary the font size and font in your resume.
  • Instead of changing the size of the font for headings, it is advisable to mention the headings in ‘bold’. This will maintain the standard font size throughout.
  • Never use, Italics, fancy fonts and fancy page borders in your resume.
  • Never use any color, watermark or background color for your resume. It should be on a plain white background, and the font color should be black.
  • While taking a hardcopy of your resume, always take a print on a good quality paper. Never take photocopies of your resume, which gives it a very blurred and dull look.

The above mentioned points are basics for any resume. These should never be overlooked or else a ‘professional looking resume’ will be a myth. After this, comes resume writing. The style of the resume depends completely upon the candidate’s information to be included in it. A fresher and a candidate with work experience will definitely have different styles of resumes. There are basically three styles of resumes.

Chronological Resume:

This is a resume, which lists all the qualification and professional details in a chronological order. It is more like a list of all that one has done and achieved in life. This style of resume has very less scope for the reader to interpret and understand the applicant, because it is merely a list of information.

Functional Resume:

This kind of resume gives the applicant a chance to be descriptive, and speak about his/her qualifications, achievements, experience, etc. The drawback of this style is that it becomes too descriptive, and might make your resume look like a thesis.

Hybrid Resume:

This style of resume is the most preferred. It takes the strong points from chronological as well as the functional resume. It presents all the information in chronological order, and also provides scope to be descriptive, where necessary. This makes it very impressive as the reader gets all the information in a proper order, and also gets a chance to judge you.

Content of the resume:

After choosing the resume style, the next step is presenting all the necessary content in your resume.

  • Heading: The heading of the resume should include your name and contact details. You can keep it aligned to the left or center of the page.
  • Objective: The resume objective should be written carefully, and should be such that it clearly presents your career goals.
  • Academic Details in chronological order beginning with the recent.
  • Details of Professional experience.
  • Achievements: Academic as well as professional
  • Personal Details
  • Declaration and Sign

These contents presented using the ‘resume basics’ tips given above, in the right style, will help you prepare a professional resume. You can take reference from many professional resume templates and resume samples, to get a clearer idea on this.

Online Movie Rental – What Movie Viewers Want

17 March, 2012 (19:48) | Uncategorized | By: admin

Consumers have a number of options when it comes to viewing movies at home. Two of the most popular are renting movies at the local video store and renting movies via an online service. An informal survey was recently conducted on a home electronics/entertainment site regarding the movie viewing habits of website visitors. The results pointed to some of the misconceptions that still exist about online rental of DVDs by consumers that have not yet tried the service.

Participants in the survey were asked a number of questions, including how often they watch movies at home, whether or not they rent movies online, and if not, why. Nearly 28% of those responding indicated that they rent movies online. Of the remainder, the most frequently cited reason for not using an online movie rental service was concern which centered around the perception that online movie rental would be more expensive than the local video store. When looking at a couple of scenarios it becomes evident which method tends to be more affordable.

For individuals who indicated that they watch only 1 to 3 movies per month the savings from renting online are small. Renting 2 movies per month at the local video store would average around $7.40 whereas renting from Netflix for example, if they chose the plan that has a limit of 2 movies per month, would run $5.99. After getting a video at the local store the user would have overnight or perhaps one week to return the movie but an online rental would allow them to keep the movie for an unlimited period of time.

For those individuals who responded that they view 1-3 movies per week, the savings would be more significant. For instance, renting 8 movies per month would run around $29.55 at the local store and as low as $14.99 online if they chose the “2 out at a time” plan or $17.99 for the “3 out at a time” plan. As viewing increases so does the likelihood of experiencing greater savings.

For those who responded that they view 4 movies per week (averaged out to 16 per month) the average cost at the local store would be $59.04 while online rental would be $23.99 allowing the user “4 out at a time”. Renting through a service like Netflix generally does not limit how many movies a person views but rather, how many movies they can have out at any given time. Therefore rentals are more or less unlimited with many of the plans.

The second most frequently cited reason for not utilizing online movie rental services was that the individual rented movies on the spur of the moment and did not plan ahead. Certainly renting movies online and receiving them through the mail would not allow someone to decide at 6:00 p.m. that they want to see The Queen and receive it so that they can be viewing the movie by 8:00 p.m. However, the delay for receiving movies selected through the mail is only 1 business day which would seem sufficient in most instances.

The future of DVD rental may be changing however as Netflix announced in early 2007 that customers would now have the option of watching movies instantly via a streaming service that is now available for some movies. The service should be quicker than most download services as streaming allows viewing of the movie as it is streamed rather than waiting until download is complete. Although a full transition from the current mail delivery system to a download type of service will take time, it is clear that immediacy will only continue to improve. It would seem that other online movie rental services would follow suit in coming years in order to compete.

Consumers who have not been initiated into the online movie rental world also may be unaware of other benefits/features of such services.

* Greater selection- A typical video store has 10,000 to 15,000 titles available whereas the Netflix online movie rental service has over 80,000. This would seem to eliminate the problem of consumers arriving at the store only to find that there is nothing there that they really want to see.

* There are no fees related to the delivery and return of DVD’s; and there is no traveling to and from the store as movies are delivered to their door or to their home via streaming.

* Movie selection is assisted by user reviews through online programs like Netflix.

* Trials of online movie rental services are generally risk free as there are free trials available and no cancellation fees.

* There are never any late fees nor restrictions on how long a movie can be kept.

Misconceptions about online movie rental services appear to limit the participation of a significant number of consumers. Online movie rental probably offers the services that most consumers want, even if they don’t know it yet.

The author, Christine Peppler invites readers to discover more information about online movie rental through information available on her website.

Sharing the Road with Tractor Trailers

13 March, 2012 (11:14) | Uncategorized | By: admin

For the automobile driver and his passengers, a collision with a truck, especially a tractor trailer, can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences. After the fact, it may not make much difference to the injured or dead which driver caused the accident. Moreover, automobile drivers cannot always avoid an accident with a tractor trailer because they have no control over the actions of either the truck driver or his employer the trucking company. Truck driver fatigue, driver substance abuse, poor truck maintenance, inadequate driver and safety training, as well as tight delivery schedules may play a role in tractor trailer accidents. What’s a driver to do?

Fortunately, an automobile driver can employ a number of defensive driving measures which will reduce the risk of colliding with a tractor trailer. First, it is imperative that automobile drivers recognize and respect the operational limitations of tractor trailers. Tractor trailers do not have the same ability to maneuver in traffic that automobiles do. Always keep this in mind as you drive with trucks nearby. For example, where a car traveling 55 MPH can come to a stop within about 265 feet, it will take a large truck 313 feet to stop.

This limitation leads to an important safety rule. Always keep your vehicle a safe distance behind or in front of a tractor trailer. Should you need to stop suddenly, you want the truck behind you to have sufficient space in which to stop without striking your vehicle’s rear end. Likewise, you want to be able to stop your own vehicle if the truck in front of you slows down suddenly. Never follow a truck closely or let one follow you closely.

A corollary to this rule involves situations where the automobile driver passes a truck and then abruptly cuts back into the truck’s travel lane without leaving sufficient distance between truck and car. Such an unexpected move can force the truck driver to slam on his brakes endangering not just the vehicle cutting in front but others close by. Make sure you have safely passed a truck, leaving plenty of distance between the two of you, before you attempt to move back into the truck’s travel lane. Likewise, don’t pass a tractor trailer quickly and then cut directly in front of it with the intention of exiting the highway. This behavior causes accidents.

You may have heard about “blind spots” or “no-zones”. You don’t want your vehicle traveling in a “blind spot” for more than a few seconds. Most vehicles, even cars, have blind spots. These are spaces you cannot see in your rear or side view mirrors. These “no-zones” around the left rear, right front, and the back of a tractor trailer are large. When your car moves into a “blind spot” while it passes a truck, the truck driver can’t see you or your car. The most immediate danger is that the truck driver will pull left or right into your travel lane without seeing you, causing a collision.

What can you do to reduce the risk of such a collision? Do not travel alongside a tractor trailer for longer than it takes you to move past the truck at a reasonable speed. This sounds simple enough, but it is not unusual for many of us to find ourselves cruising down a major highway beside a truck, sometimes for several miles at a time. The road ahead is clear, the weather is good, and we think nothing of it.

Make it a habit, as you approach a tractor trailer, to either pass the truck immediately or drop back in your lane behind the truck to a point where the truck driver can see your vehicle easily in his side view mirror. Likewise, before you begin passing a truck, make sure it doesn’t have its left turn signal activated and that it doesn’t appear to be moving, even slightly, towards your lane of travel. These are indications the truck driver is contemplating an imminent lane change. You can’t just assume the driver knows you’re there or that he will wait for you to complete your pass before he moves into your lane. Maybe he will, but maybe he won’t!

Sometimes, stopping your vehicle on the highway or on the shoulder is unavoidable. Remember, however, that there are few things more dangerous to all passengers and vehicles on the road than another vehicle stalled in a travel lane. If there is any way you can drive your vehicle entirely off the highway and also off the shoulder, do so.

Think ahead. If your vehicle seems to be developing mechanical problems or your gas gauge is near “empty”, don’t wait to take action to resolve these difficulties. Many a fatality has occurred when a tractor trailer driver fails to recognize soon enough that the vehicle ahead in his travel lane is at a dead stop. The trucker can’t come to a halt in time and ploughs into the rear of the stalled vehicle. Ordinarily, the automobile’s occupants don’t stand a chance under these circumstances.

It is best for you and your passengers to get out of harm’s way entirely if you can exit your broken down vehicle safely. After you activate your hazard lights, get as far off the highway as possible and as quickly as you can. Another auto or truck may crash into the rear of your car, and one or both vehicles could be knocked off the roadway in your direction. Keep in mind, however, that abandoning your vehicle on the road itself is extraordinarily dangerous for approaching vehicles.

On the other hand, it may be equally dangerous for you and your passengers to stay in your vehicle or try to push it off the road. Use good judgment under all the circumstances. One of the first things to do is contact the state and/or local police immediately to alert them to the road hazard. Law enforcement officers can warn approaching traffic of the hazard, reroute traffic safely around your broken down vehicle, and have it moved off the road promptly.

At night, vehicles stopped on the road or shoulder become even more dangerous. It can be almost as hazardous to stop on a highway shoulder after dark as it is to stop in a highway travel lane. No one sees well in the dark. Night vision can play strange tricks on what all of us perceive and think we see. Those tail lights far ahead of us may be nothing more than reflectors posted on either side of a driveway. On the other hand, the lights we see in the distance and assume belong to a vehicle in a moving travel lane may belong instead to a vehicle stalled on the road or shoulder. If the driver of a tractor trailer makes this error and follows what he perceives to be a moving lane of travel, he is likely to strike the stopped vehicle whether it is in a travel lane or on the shoulder. Truckers are especially prone to make this mistake at night when they are tired after a long day’s drive.

Such accidents are not uncommon, and unfortunately you read about them in the newspaper or see them reported on the television news. The most tragic examples involve cases where a “good Samaritan” stops in front of or behind the broken down automobile to render aid. The vehicle occupant(s) and the “good Samaritan” are checking under the hood of the car or are changing a tire when the tractor trailer slams into the rear of the vehicles. Don’t hang around a broken down vehicle at night. Leave its hazard lights in operation. If you can safely set out flares or triangles, do so, but, otherwise, leave the scene immediately and call for help. Stay in a safe place, out of the danger zone, until help arrives. State troopers and police officers are trained to handle these situations. You are not.

Watch out for the tractor trailer making a right turn. You don’t want to be the victim of what is commonly called a “right turn squeeze”. Tractor trailers cannot turn on a short radius. To make a sharp right turn at an intersection, they must “swing wide”. This means they often don’t approach the intersection entirely in what we think of as the “turning” lane. In making a right turn, the truck driver may move towards the left, either partially out of the right lane or completely out of it in the next lane over. This sometimes confuses the automobile operator approaching the same intersection. He may conclude, wrongly, that the truck is making a left turn or simply moving straight ahead.

In this situation, look first for the tractor trailer’s turn signals. Is the right turn signal activated? If so, you know the truck driver is preparing to turn right. Stay in your lane behind the truck. Don’t try to squeeze in to the right of the truck thinking you can get the jump on him when the light turns green. Don’t pull up to the intersection alongside the tractor trailer and assume its driver knows you’re there. You will have moved directly into his “blind spot”.

Just because your driver’s side window is directly opposite the truck’s passenger side window doesn’t mean the truck driver can look out his window and see you. Usually he can’t because he sits high up in the truck cab. If the truck driver doesn’t know you’re there, he is likely to cut you off as he makes his turn. Suddenly, you find yourself in the middle of a “squeeze play” between the truck on your left and the curb on your right.

Of course, you may have passed beyond the rear turn signals of a long tractor trailer when the trucker first activates his signal. As a result, in the end, you can’t rely simply on whether or not the truck’s right turn signal is blinking. You have to make a judgment call, and it is better to err on the side of caution. Before sliding into the space immediately to the right of a tractor trailer at an intersection, keep in mind that the truck may start turning right, directly into your path. When the red light turns green or as you approach the front end of a truck on your left side, watch the truck carefully for signs it is beginning to move into your lane of travel. If it does, take quick action to avoid it.

There is always the potential for a collision when either your vehicle or a tractor trailer is merging into traffic. If you merge into traffic improperly, from the shoulder of a highway, for example, you may cause a nearby tractor trailer to brake or turn suddenly. This may, in turn, cause a collision. Whenever you see a truck ahead of you merging into traffic, slow down and let the truck merge in front of you. Trucks simply don’t have the ability to accelerate as quickly as automobiles do.

The most potentially dangerous place on the road to find yourself is between two tractor trailers – both within a few hundred feet in front of and behind your vehicle. Just imagine what will happen to you and your car if the truck ahead slows down or stops suddenly without warning, and the truck behind you has to do the same when you begin to slow down or stop for the truck ahead. It is not a pretty picture. Remember, you can’t see around a tractor trailer to know what is going on in front of it which means you are unlikely to have any warning of the impending slow down of the truck ahead of you.

It goes without saying that unsafe speed contributes to tractor trailer accidents. Never approach a tractor trailer too fast from the rear. Also keep in mind that it is easy to misjudge a truck’s speed, especially as it approaches you.

There are many ways motorists, primarily automobile operators, can share the roads and highways more safely with nearby trucks and tractor trailers. This is not to suggest that truck drivers do not engage in unsafe behavior themselves. They do. However, whenever there is a collision between an automobile and tractor trailer, the automobile operator and his passengers are much more likely to die in the crash than the truck driver. Statistics tell us that 86 percent of those persons killed in accidents involving large trucks were not occupants of the truck. They were, for the most part, occupants of passenger vehicles. As a result, it is the automobile driver who has the most to lose in any collision with a large truck. Consequently, it is up to the automobile driver to keep the odds in his favor by driving defensively whenever he sees tractor trailers and large trucks close by.

And what’s more, the meals you cook will be done to perfection – your kind of perfection. And you know what the best part is? You already have the most important ingredient… you know what great food is!

Let’s show you the way… experimental cooking is putting YOU in charge – you’re the boss of the kitchen! You choose the ingredients you like and whip up meals to suit your specific tastes. Forget about strictly following recipes that are complicated… that requires you to buy special ingredients you will only use once then store till they expire… that calls for you to measure out precise amounts of each ingredient. All that is required is for you to have fun and experiment with blending ingredients that you like. Let your imagination rule… pick the items and create your masterpiece; from types of meats and vegetables, to how they are cooked, to what beautiful arrangement on your dinner plate. experimental cooking is also about you and the people you are preparing a meal for. You know that each person has their unique preferences, so experimental cooking is about helping you fulfill those preferences. Sounds complicated, you may think? But actually, it is rather simple; especially after you develop the basics that will forever change your mindset on cooking and open up a whole new dimension of creativity you never knew you already had within yourself.

Now let us share with you the little secrets of experimental cooking… the A, B, Cs if you will…

A. INGREDIENTS – The first key is for you to build on your knowledge of ingredients, as they are the basic building blocks for a good meal. You already know of many ingredients, now go and take a closer look; experience each ingredient individually and experiment with it. Everything edible can be an ingredient in your creation, so you need to know and understand each ingredient; from how it looks and tastes, to its texture, to how it behaves when cooked in different ways, to which other ingredients it is compatible with, to what happens if you add more or less of it to your food, etc. Since individuals experience things differently, you are your own expert; find out what you like and what you can do without. As you have your meals each day, take the opportunity to study the ingredients. Involve your family & friends and make it fun as you experience & experiment. At restaurants, and when you travel, question the chefs if you have a chance and gain perspectives into new ingredients you come across. For the computer savvy, you can also surf the web and quickly gain insight; there is tons of information online. Try typing the ingredient you’re interested in on your favorite search engine and discover a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips. As you get to know about more ingredients and become more aware of the characteristics of each ingredient, you will be able to expertly combine them to expand the number of new dishes in your cooking repertoire. There are endless combinations, so keep experimenting; you will discover many winners to surprise your guests. Have fun building up your own database of ingredients.

B. QUALITY – When you begin with great quality ingredients, you are certain to produce top quality meals; if you start with poor quality ingredients, it won’t come as a surprise that the results will naturally be disappointing. Quality can easily be determined when you use all your senses… Use your sense of Sight to look carefully at the ingredients. Check the color to see if it is bright or dull, consistent or has blemishes. Is the shape evenly symmetrical or distorted. Look also at the texture of the items. Your sense of Sight is the first sense that you will usually use when checking anything; and it is a powerful tool in determining the Quality of any ingredient. Practice and see if you can tell what the Quality of an item is, just by looking at it. You will quickly be able to use your Sight to initially screen ingredients to determine if they are worth a closer inspection or to move on. Use your sense of Hearing to listen to the tone when gently tapping or shaking an item. Does it sound hollow or solid, is there a rattling sound? Hearing is not frequently used, but can be helpful in a closer inspection of certain fruits, nuts and vegetables. Use your sense of Smell to sniff out fragrant fruits and the aroma of fresh herbs. You can also detect items to avoid when they emit off smelling odors. Train up your nose and your sense of Smell will come in handy when you search for Quality foods. If you have the opportunity, sample the items before making your decision. Besides checking that the Taste is what it should be, also observe the texture or feel it has in your mouth, when you chew on it, and when it slides down your throat. This is also your chance to confirm that you really like the Taste of the ingredient before buying. Your sense of Taste will be your most important tool when it comes to blending ingredients. With a well developed sense of Taste, you will be able to determine what ingredients, and in what quantities, will go well together. Finally is your sense of Touch. Go ahead, pick up and handle the ingredients you are inspecting. How does it feel in your hands? Is it heavy or light, hard or soft, firm or supple, smooth or rough, dry or moist?? You can tell a good deal about the Quality of an ingredient by how it feels; you just need a little practice to fine tune and “get the feel” of things. Practice using all your senses to fully examine ingredients and learn how to pick Top Quality items for your specific needs. It is now time for you to exercise your senses whenever you go shopping for food. Have a good time tuning up your skills in search of Quality at the markets and stores.

C. DESIGNING – Now comes the fun part of Designing your meals. The first consideration is who you are cooking for and what are their likes and dislikes. Do take some time to ask your family, friends, or guests about their eating preferences, especially if they require special diets for health reasons, or are allergic to certain foods. From this mini survey, you can plan a meal that will delight everyone.

You can now begin to narrow down your choices; consider if you want to do appetizers and/or soup, what are the best choice for your main courses, and if you wish to make desert? Design a simple meal or an elaborate feast: it’s all up to you. Use your knowledge of ingredients to decide on what blend of ingredients will achieve the unique flavors you want. Also consider how the ingredients will look together, and how you can make your dishes visually appealing. At the beginning, you may feel more comfortable sticking to traditional flavors and cooking tried and tested recipes. But as you gain confidence after experimenting with traditional foods by altering their taste to suit your preferences better, then its time to be bold and creative; try to design something totally new once in a while. It is also fairly easy for you to design meals to take into account differing preferences among your guests; simply separate your ingredients and add or withhold them into individual portions of your dishes. In the Design phase, you may wish to consider the cooking style as well, since the way food is cooked will make a difference in the outcome in terms of taste and texture.

D. COOKING STYLES – Mastering many Cooking Styles is another way to increase the diversity of your meals. Brush up on your cooking skills by not only practicing the various Styles of Cooking, but also by paying close attention to the details of the cooking process, what each Cooking Style does to your food and the resulting appearance, taste & texture. experiment with variations to the standard method (different temperature, time, sequence, combinations, etc.) and observe the results. Learn new Styles as you come across them, and also try your hand at inventing new ways to cook. There are many methods of cooking your food; some more conventional like Baking, Barbecuing, Braising, Roasting, Stewing and Steaming. Some are more exotic like cooking meat on a slab of hot stone. So do try out the various cooking styles on your favorite foods and discover which are to your liking. Also experiment with combinations; for example you can first steam a lobster, then cut it open and put some cheese in before grilling for a short while to melt and brown the cheese sauce. Think of new ways to cook, after all its just applying heat to food. You can also broaden your knowledge and skills by observing how people of various lands cook their meals in special ways when you travel.

E. PRESENTATION – The final element is how you serve up the feast that you have prepared. Food Presentation is the art of making your meals visually appealing. Since the objective is to serve up something that will look good, experiment with what you think will look nice when assembled together. If you want to keep it simple, just focus on the dish and what is to be put on it. If you want to pull out all the stops, then go with a theme of your choice and dress up everything, including the dining room. Let’s run through some ideas to move you along… On the simple end of the scale, all you need to do is select a suitable bowl or plate and arrange your food on it, then add something to garnish. The easiest is to place all your food onto serving plates for your guest to help themselves. Select large enough bowls and plates, matching if desired, that can hold the amount of food you have prepared. You can fill a serving bowl with soup and sprinkle some chopped spring onions on top to garnish. Fish can be served on an oval plate, or one of those fish shaped dishes, and you can arrange some lettuce and round slices of lemon to decorate. For prawns, try arranging them in a circle on a round plate, and put sauce for dipping right in the center. You can be more creative when you do individual servings. For the main course, you can simply lay out the meat, potatoes and vegetables on different sectors of the plate in a traditional manner; just remember to include ingredients with nice colors and arrange them in your chosen pattern. Try using carrots or tomatoes to add bright orange or red to your dish. Use corn, pasta or potatoes for a dose of yellow. How about tri-color pasta to really mix up the colors? Appetizers and deserts are my favorites as you can really let your imagination go… and come up with really delightful creations. Try using a Burgundy wine glass for your shrimp cocktail, then plant a stick of celery with the leafy end up on one side and garnish the lip of the glass with a circular slice of lemon for a lovely presentation of this favorite appetizer. Now go forth and create visual masterpieces to serve your guests; they will surely be astonished at your work of art. Collect this Car, it’s a Classic!

13 March, 2012 (01:38) | Uncategorized | By: admin

Collecting Cars for Fun and Profit

Antique and classic cars are being collected now more than ever. Classic car collectors learn their hobby over years and years of research and browsing, even attending a half dozen or more car shows each year. However, some basic information is available to help anyone begin the lifelong passion of collecting antique automobiles.

Definition of a Classic Car

A classic car is one that is more than 15-years old, while an antique car is more than 25-years old. A vintage car dates from the 1930′s or older. As well, there are different car eras, such as the Vintage Car Era, Classic Car Era, Muscle Car Era, and so on, and this is also important to understand.

Display and Drivable Cars

Some antique car collectors drive their cars everywhere, while others have theirs for display purposes only. Display cars often have the benefit of needing less maintenance to keep their classic feel and pristine condition. If you want to drive your classic car, remember that it will require more money for such services as paint and wax jobs, engine work, and inspections. Not only do antique cars lack modern safety features such as airbags and anti-lock brakes, but vintage cars may also lack modern conveniences like power steering, stereo systems, or even heat.

Expenses

Antique car collectors know that antique cars in general are very expensive investments, but there are several ways to cut these costs and make collecting cars an even more enjoyable experience. Many cars are simply left to rust away in lawns or in junkyards. These cars can often be bought at a real bargain for even a few dollars. However, the cheaper these cars are usually indicates what shape they come in. Therefore, several decisions must be made concerning the usability of the cars. Will they be driven? Do they need a new engine? What use will they have on a daily basis?

With some body work to remove rust and replace irreparable damage, these cars can even receive new interiors and engines. The most common work is a brand new paint job (the most noticeable and appreciable work), so a good deal can cost as little as $1000. With an interest in automobiles and a modest income, restoring antique cars can be the lifelong hobby of antique car collectors.

Ratings for Antique Car Appraisal

An antique car appraisal must be based on uniform standards to get a correct appraisal.

Parts Car, this means that the car is only to be used for individual car parts. The car itself has no value except for the individual parts that can be taken from it and used in other cars. The car might not be a candidate for restoration, and therefore appraisers will not waste other people’s time and money by declaring it usable except for parts.

Restorable, means the car in question has potential to be restored. The car model and make must still be recognizable to warrant this antique car appraisal rating. It may also need a complete body, chassis and interior restoration if it is appraised in this condition. Most likely the engine will also need some attention as well as the exterior, but not to the point that you restore more than a third of the body, chassis or interior.

Good, this antique car appraisal means that the automobile may need just a little tweaking to make it functional. The quality of restoration of the automobile may also affect the antique car appraisal. If it is functional yet the quality of restoration is poor, then the price will still not go up despite its good condition. The antique car appraisal should always include the quality of the restoration.

A Very Good antique car appraisal could mean that the automobile is functional and the amateur restoration is passable. The restoration might be rated as older or worn out to some extent but not as bad as expected. A Very Good antique car appraisal might be considered presentable and serviceable in the interior and exterior.

Fine is the antique car appraisal that means the automobile is restored very well and its original parts are well maintained to the point that they are in good working order.

The Excellent antique car appraisal means that the car in question has been restored to excellent professional standards and could possibly be a show car that is not driven or worn out but maintained for aesthetic purposes.

Antique Car Pricing

Antique car pricing depends on many different factors, and antique car pricing can vary from year to year. The prices can also vary depending on the point of sale. Antique car pricing depends on the age of the car, the condition of the car and special features on a car.

An antique car that is very old might be much more expensive than a newer classic car. These car prices fluctuate like more modern cars depending upon the condition. An antique car that is in mint condition could cost ten thousand dollars more than the same model in poor condition. Antique car pricing can also vary depending on the mechanics of the car. One that is road-ready will cost much more than one that looks good but does not move on the streets.

Antique car pricing depends on the year and the condition of the car, but the pricing can also depend on many of the various features in each car. Some of the classic cars have radios that actually still work while the older cars never do. Some of these cars have original mirrors while others have modern replicas. The fabric used in the interior could have a significant impact on the prices of antique cars; if the fabric in the interior is the original and in great condition, this is important in the price of the vehicle.

Many collectors of classic cars base their prices of the cars they have on a price guide. The antique car price guide gives approximations of how much a certain model of automobile may cost these days. The prices found in the antique car price guide are somewhat loosely approximated because not all cars of the same make and model are restored professionally or even restored properly. Popular price guides include MacRAE’s Blue Book online, and Kelley Blue Book.

The hobby of collecting antique and classic cars can be fun and enjoyable, and it can also incredibly rewarding, especially financially. As long as you are informed and take the situation seriously, you should not have any problems, and not only will you have a great time but as well can make quite a bit of profit for yourself if you go about things in the right way.

The Difference Between Premium and Discount Fly Fishing Flies

13 March, 2012 (00:17) | Uncategorized | By: admin

How big of a difference do premium fly fishing flies make to your day on the water? There are many out there advertising “Quality” or “Premium” fly fishing flies, but are far from it. A premium dry fly will land right-side up, float properly and consistently, and retain those properties even after catching 5,10, even 20 fish. On the other hand, improperly tied flies will often land upside down, on their side, or even on their head.

A premium trout fly in a fly shop costs anywhere from $1.50 to $3.00, bass and surf flies $3.00 – $5.00 but there are literally dozens of online retailers who offer similar patterns for half that price. You may pay more for a premium fly at a fly shop but research suggests the fly will last nearly 10 times longer. You have to ask yourself one question: Do I want a 2 fish fly or a 20 fish fly? Let’s examine some of the differences:

Materials

The first important material is the hackle. Great strides have been made over the past 60 years with the hackles that are used by the premium commercial fly tiers. Flocks have been bread based upon color, hackle length, and barb stiffness to create superior hackle.

It has been a process beginning with Harry Darbee in the 1940′s and 1950′s continuing today with the hackles produced by Dr. Tom Whiting of Whiting Farms and Buck Metz of Metz Hackles, among others. Premium fly manufacturers such as Idylwilde Flies, Umpqua Feather Merchants, and Rainy flies use top quality premium hackles

The second material of significant importance is the quality of the hook. Tiemco has positioned itself as the World’s leader in premium grade fly fishing hooks with creativity and attention to detail in the functional designs of its premium fly tying hooks. From trout to tarpon, in freshwater or saltwater, for bass poppers or Micro Mayflies, top fly manufacturers choose Tiemco hooks over the other competitor’s best efforts. They were one of the first manufacturers to chemically sharpen the points and now is standard throughout the industry. They carry a very broad line of flyfishing hooks with about 46 models to choose from. At the end of the hook designation, you might see a “SP,” this stands for Specialty Point. The SP hooks have a hollow curve point with triangulated edges for easier sharpening. The hooks also have a slow taper which assists in easier hook sets. An interesting aspect of this hook is the basal end of the point has a swelling that works much like a barb without being a barb.

This may be of some advantage in holding hook sets with the barbless hooks. Another designation you may see is “TC” which stands for Tiemco Cut. This is a cut that Tiemco uses on certain wet and streamer flies for enhanced hooking penetration. “Its all about quality, or better said lack thereof,” Bruce Olson from Umpqua Feather Merchants says. “The first issue is that cheap imports always are tied on very cheap hooks, with strange sizing. I find that a quality fly has to be tied on [name brand] hooks. This becomes very important for big game, such as tarpon, where sharpness and tensile strength of the hook wire are vital.”

A discount fly company’s failure to use top-notch materials means the final product doesn’t measure up. As Shawn Brillon, the lead fly buyer for Orvis says, “If you have to tie with junk, often the final product is the same… junk.”

Discount fly manufacturers also take shortcuts to reduce costs and materials. Bruce states, “In order to produce flies that cheap, these guys have got to take shortcuts.” The discount fly companies use inferior hooks and materials, skip important tying steps (such as laying down a glue base on the hook shank to keep the materials in place), and don’t exhibit much quality control.

Patterns

A second important quality of premium fly fishing flies is the adherence to standard pattern recipes. Bruce described one “Copper John” that he purchased online as missing the epoxy over the shellback and the lead under the thorax.

“So, you may have saved a lot of money on the fly, but it’s not a Copper John!” he says, and he notes that such an inferior version of the popular fly won’t perform on the water the way its designer intended. Without the lead, it won’t sink correctly, and the lack of epoxy makes the fly much less durable.

Factories

Most fly production is done in third world countries because of price but also because they still work with their hands. Although they are third world countries the fly tiers are paid a good wage and earn middle class income for their work. The more expensive flies carried by the premium fly shops such as Blue River Fly Company are tied in Thailand, the fly tying capital of the world. There are over a dozen major fly tying companies that have tying facilities there. Other areas of the world that do a significant amount of fly production include China, Sir Lanka, and Kenya. There is some production in Central and South America, Mexico, and the Philippines. The fly production in the United States and Europe where the largest number of users are is primarily by home tiers or tiers that tie for specific fly shops.

Many premium fly manufacturers, including Idylwilde have a strong belief in corporate social responsibility and believe in fair trade. They take responsibility for the impact their activities have on customers, employees, communities and the environment. As Idylwilde describes on its website: “If a fly’s worth only $.99 it not only sucks, but it was likely tied in a third-world sweatshop and we’d rather not have that bad mojo hanging on our conscience. Idylwilde fly fishing flies are tied in Manila, Philippines under a markedly forward-thinking arrangement with Sister Christine Tan, a Catholic nun who believed her people needed more than charity. They needed good-paying, honest jobs they could rely on as they built a life outside the confines of poverty. Our promise to Sister Christine continues some 12 years later, now enabling over 150 tiers to better provide for their families. The flies you see here are the work of their hands and their hopes.”

Fly Fishing Fly Costs

The average cost of goods for a premium fly manufacturer for the simple dry flies and nymphs equates to about $ 4.50 – $5.50 a dozen. Additional shipping, duty costs and a US excise tax add an additional $1.00 a dozen.

The fly companies that are importing the flies need to make a profit so the cost to the shops are generally at keystone (50% markup) so the cost to the shops is now at $ 12.00 per dozen. The fly shop pays shipping and marks up for their operating costs and profit, keystone again, the cost to the consumer is pushing that $2 -3 price you pay at a brick and mortar fly shop.

The large box stores, in order to get the pricing down to what they do are either getting huge discounts for volume buying or they are getting flies that are tied somewhere other than Thailand, or both. Hopefully now when you get sticker shock when you go into a fly shop you can understand why the shop is charging what it does.

Cost per Fish

Bruce Olson argues that anglers should look at the cost of a fly in relation to its durability. If the 75-cent Stimulator falls apart after the second fish, but the $1.75 Umpqua Stimulator is good for 10 fish, then the cost-effectiveness of the more expensive fly is twice as high. (75 divided by 2 fish=37.5 cents per fish, 175 divided by 10 fish=17.5 cents per fish.) “You gotta do the math,” says Olson.

Premium Fly Fishing Flies

You would not settle for sub-standard rods, reels, fly lines, waders, etc. that fall apart or break after a couple times fishing. Why then settle of substandard flies? Flies are the most important part of fly fishing. If the end result to all of this is to catch fish then why not spend more time, money, and energy on the only element the fish actually care about?”

Price is a pretty good indicator to the overall quality of the flies you buy. Cheap flies are almost always cheaply tied. It does not take a Rocket Scientist to do the math. You can also test them out by making sure they don’t easily spin, are designed well for balance, are tied to the proper proportion, etc

Umpqua, Idylwilde, and Rainy have significantly raised the standards by which high-quality fishing flies are defined with their use of premium materials such as Tiemco hooks, Metz and Whiting hackle, and by developing the consummate skills of its production fly tyers.

By Jason Adams, Founder of Blue River Fly Company. Blue River Fly Company is a fly fishing shop established in Durango, CO specializing in premium fly fishing flies and fly fishing gear and giving back to the planet.

Difference Between On-Campus Education and Online Education

12 March, 2012 (15:16) | Uncategorized | By: admin

On-campus education vs. online education! Is one better than the other? Can one completely replace the other? Indeed it seems that online education is the way of the future. Educational institutions, corporations and government organizations alike already offer various forms of electronic teaching. However, can a computer truly replace a teacher and a blackboard?

How people learn

Each individual has a form of learning that suits them best. Some individuals achieve fantastic results in courses taught online, however most people drop out of 100% computer-led courses. Educational institutions, as well as companies in carrying out staff training, must recognize that there is no ideal way to carry out the teaching of a large group of individuals, and so must design programs that best suits the needs of the group as a whole.

People learn using multiple senses. This involves learning through both theoretical components of a course, as well as social interaction with both instructors.and other students. Students learn from each other’s mistakes and successes, not just from what they are told by instructors.

Each individual student has an ideal learning pace. Instructors are therefore faced with the challenge of designing courses that move forward such that those students with a slower learning pace do not get left behind, while not moving so slowly that students with faster learning paces get bored.

Online education

In the age of high-speed information transfer, online education is becoming a popular and cheap means for delivering teaching to individuals outside the classroom, and in some cases all over the world. Teaching can be via CD, websites, or through real-time online facilities such as webcasts, webinars and virtual classrooms. However, different methods of online education each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Online education is still a relatively new concept, and in many respects still in the teething stages. As such, various problems arrive across different online education environments. For example:

1. Lack of immediate feedback in asynchronous learning environments: While some online education environments such as webcasts, webinars and virtual classrooms operate live with the addition of an instructor, most do not. Teaching that is delivered through a CD or website, although having the advantage of being self-paced, provides no immediate feedback from a live instructor.

2. More preparation required on the part of the instructor: In an online education environment, an instructor can not simply stand in front of a whiteboard and deliver a class. Lessons in online education environments must be prepared ahead of time, along with any notes and instructions that may accompany the teaching.

In many cases it would also be necessary that the instructor not only understands the concepts being taught, but the technology used to deliver that teaching. This therefore increases the skill-levels needed of online education instructors, placing greater demand on educational institutions.

Staffing levels may also be higher for courses run in an online education environment, requiring for example:

The Instructor – able to teach both course content and be skilled in the use of technologies involved

The Facilitator – to assist the instructor in delivering content, but may do so remotely

Help Desk – to offer assistance to instructors, facilitators and students in the use of both software and hardware used to deliver the course.

3. Not all people are comfortable with online education: Education is no longer only sought by the world’s youth. With an increased trend towards adult and continuing education, there is a need to design courses suitable for students over a larger age-range, as well as students from different and varied backgrounds. It is difficult, however, to design online education environments suitable for everyone.

4. Increased potential for frustration, anxiety and confusion: In an online education environment, there are a greater number of parts making up the system that can fail. Server failures may prevent online courses from operating. Software based teaching applications may require other specific components to operate. Computer viruses may infect software necessary to run online education environments. If these systems are complex, students may choose the ease of On-campus education rather than taking the additional time and effort necessary to master the use of online education systems.

5. The Digital Divide: Many people who live in remote areas and developing countries do not have access to computers, making any form of online education virtually impossible. For this reason, online education is only able to be targeted at the people lucky enough to be able to take advantage of the technology involved. Similarly, offering live teaching across the world means that different time zones and nationalities increase the demand for multi-skilled instructors.

In addition to these, there are also several legal issues associated with maintaining an online education environment. For example, intellectual property laws, particularly those relating to copyright, may or may not fully cover electronically created intellectual property. For example, information on a website is not necessarily considered to be public domain, despite being available to everyone. However, the Australian Copyright Act was amended in 2001 to ensure that copyright owners of electronic materials, including online education environments, could continue to provide their works commercially.

On-Campus Education

Still the most common form of instruction is traditional classroom-style learning. These instructor-led environments are more personal than online education environments, and also have the advantage of allowing for immediate feedback both to and from student and teachers alike. However, the classroom allows for less flexibility than courses run in online education environments.

Instructors in modern classroom environments are still able to take advantage of several forms of electronic teaching tools while still maintaining the atmosphere associated with the traditional classroom environment. For example, PowerPoint slides can be utilized instead of a whiteboard or blackboard. Handouts can be distributed via course websites prior to the event. However, on the day, students are still able to actively participate in the lesson.

Like online education environments, On-campus education comes with certain drawbacks, the most common of which is the classroom itself. This requires a group of people which, in a university for example, could reach a few hundred people in size, to gather in the same place at the same time. This requires enormous time and financial commitment on behalf of both the students and the educational institution.

However, it is this sort of environment that is most familiar to students across the world. People of all ages can access a classroom environment feeling comfortable with the way that a classroom-run course is carried out. Older students who may not be comfortable with the use of information technology are not required to navigate their way through possibly complex online education environments, making On-campus education the most accessible form of teaching.

On-campus education has one advantage that 100% electronically delivered courses can not offer – social interaction. Learning comes from observing, not only what is written on a page or presented in a slideshow, but what is observed in others. Most students are naturally curious, and so will want to ask questions of their instructors. The classroom environment allows students to clarify what is being taught not only with their instructors, but with other students.

So, Which is Better?

There is no style of instruction that will best suit every student. Studies have shown (Can online education replace On-campus education) that courses where online education is used to complement On-campus education have proved more effective than courses delivered entirely using only one method. These courses take advantage of both online education materials and a live instructor, and have produced results higher than those of students in either 100% online education or classroom environment courses. Students have the advantage of the immediate feedback and social interaction that comes with the classroom environment, as well as the convenience of self-paced online education modules that can be undertaken when it best suits the student.

It would seem that online education environments will never completely replace On-campus education. There is no “one size fits all” method of teaching. Teaching styles will continue to adapt to find the method that best fits the learning group. Using a mix of online education environments and classroom sessions, educational institutions, corporations and government organizations can ensure that training is delivered that is convenient and effective for both instructors and students alike.

Hiking Tips – Safety, Equipment and Hiking Gear

12 March, 2012 (14:51) | Uncategorized | By: admin

When you talk about hiking, it does not mean you have to go for something as outlandish or extreme as the Appalachian Trail. It can be as simple as taking a walk through a forest or up a hill in your neighborhood’s vicinity. For the most part, hiking will cost you nothing to very little and is a great stress reliever. Indeed, the mental and physical benefits you can get from hiking ensure you can live a more fruitful and fulfilled life.

But even though hiking can be fun, there are also a number of precautions and survival tips one must take into consideration to avoid danger and stay safe. Among the more important tips is for one to hike in a group. It is much safer for one to hike in a group especially if it is on a nature trail you are unaccustomed to.

Hiking with Friends

The support and motivation obtained from the group will help you in those times when you might think of packing up leaving. Actually, even when you are hiking on trail you are used to, it does not hurt to bring at least one person along as this is a natural deterrent to anyone along the trail that may be lurking with ill intent.

You also must take precautions when hiking up and down a hill. On the ascent, you should loosely lace your boots around your ankles to provide ample room for movement. When going downhill, you need to avoid jamming your toes by placing your heels in the back of the boots and tightly tying your laces around the ankles while leaving them loose at the toes.

Use a hiking stick or trekking pole. These sticks help with balance and stability when going up or down an incline. They also provide an additional support to your legs, reduce the knee pressure and help you support the upper body especially when you embark on a long trek.

Carry Water

Always carry your own water. If you are sure there will be water at your destination, carry just slightly more than sufficient water to last until you arrive. Water is of greater importance than food to your survival. Always filter any water you find along the trail and that you are in need of using – unless the water is from a natural spring. If you can fix a long drinking straw to the water bottle so you can drink as you move, the better.

Dress in layers in order to ensure you maintain the proper body temperature with changes in weather. The weather can change drastically when you are out on a long hike and you need to be prepared for all type of weather conditions. Avoid cotton clothing because it holds moisture for long periods. Use polypropylene and other synthetic materials. Make sure you wear dark clothing because they dry faster. Wear light colored clothing if you’re hiking in areas known for their tick infestation.

It’s also important that one watch out for sunstroke when hiking in the hot sun. If you plan on hiking in the summer then you must be aware that the exposure to high temperature can cause excessive fluid loss which may lead to heat exhaustion, or in serious cases even to a heat stroke. Wear a hat that is broad rimmed and that has a strap. It gives better protection from hot wind and direct sunlight.

Hiking Boots and Equipment

Of all the hiking gear and equipment you need, your hiking boots are probably the most important. Good boots give you traction and support throughout the hike. A good pair of boots need not be overly expensive even though you should not compromise on quality in the name of lower overall cost. It is advisable that you purchase your boots from a dealer who is conversant with the standards required of outdoor wear. Boots vary from lightweight for light hiking to heavy boots that are more durable and support the feet and ankles. The features you need to look out for when buying your hiking boots include water resistance, weight of the boot, the price, the toe groove for crampons, the width of toe box and the gusseted tongue.

Apart from your hiking boots, there are other forms of equipment needed for you hike. If you plan on embarking on a day hike, you will need hiking socks, water purifying tablets (if you are not carrying your own water), a back pack, walking stick, traction devices, rescue beacons, signaling gear, Avalanche probes (if you will be on snow covered hilly terrain), jackets, binoculars, first aid kit, a compass, sunscreen and food. For an overnight hike, you will require a tent, sleeping bag, camp stoves, rain gear, matches, a Swiss army knife, and a flashlight.

Get a map of the route you plan on taking. If you plan to hike alone or with one another person, notify your family (or a ranger if you are hiking through a park) on the place where you will be and the time you expect to return. That way, someone can come looking for you if you are in trouble or just simply lost.

Celebrity Product Placement: A Primer

12 March, 2012 (10:26) | Uncategorized | By: admin

With more and more companies wanting to integrate their products into the lives of

celebrities, now seems like a good time to take a closer look at Celebrity Product

Placement, describe three common approaches, and outline what steps can be taken

to guarantee results.

The term “Celebrity Product Placement” is used to describe several related

techniques, but its definition applies to each: free products are distributed to

celebrities in expectation of a promotional benefit. Unlike the more overt, paid-for

endorsement, it offers a distinct advantage. It can appear like a product choice

made on individual preference.

Most marketers are unaware of their options in this category (one form features

contracts with celebrities, guaranteeing performance and allowing marketers to

actively leverage celebrity patrons in the media) and therefore many overlook a very

powerful influencer-marketing technique.

In this article, I will describe each of the three main approaches and discuss their

relative merits by listing their pros and cons. I also hope to quash any

misconception that Celebrity Product Placement has to be a gamble, and show you

how best to secure a return on investment (R.O.I.).

But first, a little history…

Celebrity Product Placement (sometimes called “Celebrity Seeding”) has been with us

since the dawn of marketing. Centuries before Arnold Schwarzenegger stepped into

his first Hummer, an 18th century potter named Josiah Wedgwood began supplying

his wares to England’s Queen Charlotte. Being given the title “Potter to Her Majesty”

led to a huge amount of publicity for Wedgwood which he took advantage of using

the term “Queen’s Ware” wherever he could.

It wasn’t until the 20th century that marketers keyed-in on America’s “royalty”:

Hollywood. But more often than not they met with disappointing results. Some

companies responded only to occasional requests for products (“gifting”), while

others made half-hearted attempts to distribute them without first devising a means

to guarantee results (“seeding”). In the end, most companies seeded product “to the

wind” and failed to grow anything of value.

Those efforts that did succeed, however, were so successful that independent

specialists emerged to help companies achieve better results. But the services they

offer vary and so do the results.

What’s It All About?

Marketers have long known the power of celebrity to influence consumer-

purchasing decisions. The term “borrowed equity” has been used to describe how a

celebrity endorsement can bestow upon a product special attributes and cache it

might not otherwise have.

The same concept applies to Celebrity Product Placement. But unlike celebrity

endorsements, where a highly compensated personality appears in commercial

advertising, Celebrity Product Placement offers marketers a more subtle and highly

effective means of reaching the public – via the media they consume by choice.

Indeed, Celebrity Product Placement is as much about placing products with

celebrities as it is about getting stories about those relationships into the press.

Regardless of the approach, Celebrity Product Placement strategies have a common

aim: to tie celebrities (thought-leaders, influencers) with consumer products in the

public consciousness.

Three different techniques offer three different levels of control over that placement:

gifting-the-talent (this usually involves supplying products for gift bags at live

events); product seeding (products are distributed more widely in hopes of securing

a promotional benefit and kicking off a trend); and, barter relationships (individual

celebrities agree to participate in custom programs in exchange for valuable

products).

Let’s take a look at each one in greater detail.

GIFTING-THE-TALENT

“Everybody” knows that celebrities own all the coolest stuff, and well before

everybody else. Celebrities travel the world and every minute detail of their daily

lives pervades the media. As style-leaders, they are perhaps our most powerful

influencers. It’s no wonder then that companies are lining up to give them the latest

gifts and gadgets for free.

One method to do this is called “Gifting-The-Talent.” This generally involves

supplying free product for insertion into “goody bags” which are handed out as

‘thank you’ gifts to celebrity presenters and award nominees at the now-countless

awards shows and charity benefits that dot the entertainment landscape.

At last year’s Academy Awards, for example, one of two Best Actress gift-bags

featured Gucci sunglasses, a Sprint PCS phone, Christian Tse 18-carat gold Iris

earrings, and more. The Best Actor bag featured Gucci eyewear, a Maurice Lacroix

Swiss watch and assorted other goodies. According to news reports, the retail value

of one such group of bags at the Oscars exceeded $110,000 each!

But how effective is this practice? If the goal of Celebrity Product Placement is to get

press coverage, can we measure the value of gift-bag placements? What types of

products are suitable and which are not? And what level of control does this strategy

offer marketers both in terms of demographics and reach?

There is no denying the value of being associated with these glitzy events, and by

extension, the celebrities who populate them. On the plus side, they offer a rare

opportunity to get close to the biggest stars in the world. On the minus side, the

marketer has no control in matching up celebrities who hold sway over their

particular demographic. They have to play the cards they are dealt.

Gifting-the-talent at award shows virtually guarantees mentions in the celebrity

press at the time of the event; but without permission to associate the celebrity’s

name and likeness with the product, marketers don’t have the leeway to truly

leverage those relationships in their own press activities.

Gifting-the-talent in this way has other limitations: first-movers snap-up desirable

categories and, of course, not all products are deemed appropriate. You won’t find

an energy drink in these bags.

PRODUCT SEEDING

Product Seeding offers marketers more control over whom to place products with

but, conversely, less control over how (or if) those products get used. And, while

virtually any product – from bottled water to consumer electronics – can be seeded

with celebrities, marketers are playing the odds here. But the payoff can be huge if

the seeding is supported by a creative strategy.

Product Seeding is the oldest form of Celebrity Product Placement. Products are

distributed more widely. They can be aimed at celebrities who are most compelling

to your demographic. And they can be delivered directly to the celebrity without the

filters imposed by events. Of course, working with a specialist who can get your

product directly to celebrities becomes paramount here. Film and television product

placement agencies are NOT set up for this practice.

Taken by itself, Product Seeding is a gamble. If you send enough freebies to

Hollywood but you don’t have a creative strategy, a celebrity might be photographed

using your product or evangelizing it on a talk show. But if one looks at Product

Seeding as one tactic in a larger Celebrity Product Placement effort, it can pay big

dividends – particularly in identifying celebrities who have a true affinity for your

product.

Energy Brands, makers of the Glaceau Vitamin Water line, discovered this in 2004.

As a result of its long-time strategy to “home deliver” the vitamin-enhanced drink

to celebrities (including Sean “Puffy” Combs and Tom Cruise), the company gained a

fan in 50 Cent. Having mentioned his preference for the product in a series of

interviews, the Hip Hop star – who is well known for his fitness-centered lifestyle –

became an obvious choice for brand spokesperson.

Speaking to Ad Age magazine, Energy Brands’ VP of marketing, Rohan Oza, said

“We’ve seen that when 50 Cent incorporates [Vitamin Water] into his daily routine …

the brand gets on the airwaves and we create a lot of trial.” Making vitamin water a

visible part of the rapper’s healthy lifestyle worked so well the company launched a

new “Formula 50″ variety named for the artist.

Such “organic” relationships can grow from Product Seeding. Not only can marketers

benefit from press mentions, but the process can be used to uncover promotional

opportunities and, in some cases, identify the most ideal product endorsers.

Product Seeding remains a gamble but, if executed properly, one well worth taking.

Relatively speaking, it is a very low-cost marketing program. And the return on

investment – though difficult to forecast compared to barter relationships discussed

below – can be big. But what if your goal is limited to getting press mentions? Can a

publicist hedge his or her bets in this category?

One of the great things about Product Seeding is how creative you can get. For

Trident White chewing gum, the company commissioned a Harris poll asking the

public to vote on the best “celebrity smiles.” My company, which specializes in

celebrity product placement, delivered gift baskets of the product to the Top 6

winners, allowing Trident to plug the celebrities in their press materials.

On another occasion, Electrolux – maker of a new high-end, super-quiet vacuum

cleaner – wanted to align their product with celebrities. We identified 6 celebrity

moms who had recently given birth and – touting the fact that these vacuums would

not wake a sleeping baby – made gifts of the product to each. Here again, the

company was able to use celebrities to draw press coverage for its product. And

they were able to reference these celebrities because they were stating facts (a gift

was made to…).

But what if you want tighter integration with celebrities? Suppose you need to

forecast a return on investment in order to get approval for a Celebrity Product

Placement campaign? And what if you want celebrities to provide feedback about

your product and authorize use of their names and likenesses as part of your press

campaign?

BARTER RELATIONSHIPS

Barter is, perhaps, the only way to guarantee performance on the part of the

celebrity. Unlike other forms of gifting, this is a quid pro quo relationship whereby

the celebrity agrees in advance to participate in the marketer’s promotional activities

- in exchange for valuable product.

Celebrity Product Placement campaigns of this type work best for big-ticket items

such as consumer electronics and (the loan of) cars. But with creative approaches,

special product questionnaires and generous “Right of Publicity” agreements,

marketers can use the celebrity’s name, likeness and opinion as part of their public

relations campaigns.

Celebrity Product Placement – via barter agreements – is also among the most

affordable ways to use celebrities. For the price of a few products, and sometimes a

token honorarium, companies can integrate testimonials into their PR materials and

create customized celebrity content for their websites.

They can involve numerous stars in a press campaign for less than the cost of a

single paid celebrity spokesperson. It is one of the most under-exploited tactics

available to marketers today.

A Case Study: Sony Electronics

The Sony CD Mavica – at the time, the only digital camera offering a built-in CD-

Rom – had failed to penetrate the increasingly crowded market for digital imaging

products. This was troubling for Sony because the CD Mavica offered clear

advantages over its competitors; namely, freedom from wires. But that message had

failed to reach the public.

Sony wanted to involve celebrities with their products and for that involvement to

influence the public in a meaningful way. They wanted a high-profile event –

preferably benefiting charity – upon which to launch a yearlong press campaign in

time for the Christmas shopping season. The focus: to promote the simplicity of

CD-based photography.

The budget was limited. But, having learned that the latest Sony products could be

made available to gift the talent, The Hollywood-Madison Group proposed a

Celebrity Product Placement campaign. Each celebrity would be asked to take a

picture of what “Freedom” means to them, and those photos would be auctioned off

for charity.

Such an artistic challenge, coupled with the prospect of receiving free Sony product,

not only served to induce celebrities to participate, but offered us an extraordinary

opportunity: to frame these pictures and mount an exhibition which raised money

for charity. Indeed, the charity component attracted higher-caliber celebrities and

provided the “hook” to draw media attention.

We successfully placed the Sony CD Mavica digital camera with fifteen top stars

including Eric McCormack, Alyssa Milano and Dennis Hopper. The photographs were

then offered for sale on eBay as part of Wired magazine’s annual charity auction,

and put on display at a star-studded event in Los Angeles.

Fifteen top celebrities demonstrated the practical use of Sony’s product and

authorized the use of their names, likenesses and opinions about the product for

press and marketing purposes (for one year). Sony received free advertising for its

product in print and online for three months (worth an estimated $100,000), as well

as 3.6 million webpage impressions (auction as a whole) and national press

coverage including Entertainment Tonight.

You can read more about this project on our website>celebrity_projects>influencer

campaigns.

Conclusion

Celebrity Product Placement offers marketers an exciting way to influence

consumer-purchasing decisions. Properly executed, it can be a low-cost, high-

return proposition. As such, it should be part of every consumer-marketing

program.

Three different approaches offer three different results: gifting-the-talent (narrow

focus); product seeding (broad focus) and, barter relationships (one-on-one focus).

But, as we have seen, a tightly integrated celebrity product placement campaign,

combining elements of each, can improve results and deliver an impressive return

on investment.

Bowling Alleys

12 March, 2012 (08:57) | Uncategorized | By: admin

“Bowling Alley”, “Bowling Center”, “The Bowl” and “House” are used interchangeably to describe the building where bowling takes place. Bowling alleys are usually comprised of many lanes (as many as 100 or more), but can be comprised of only a few lanes. Some people have a lane in their home, while I wouldn’t consider this a bowling alley, per se; it is in the most literal sense one. A single lane is sometimes referred to as a bowling alley. For the purposes of this book, a bowling alley or house will refer to a place where there are multiple lanes and games are purchased.

Where are bowling alleys?

They are everywhere. Lately it seems that a lot more houses are closing due to property and maintenance prices getting to expensive, or lack of use. Looking in your local telephone book, you should be able to find quite a few houses in your area. Bowling is a very popular sport and therefore there are a lot of bowling alleys in most areas. If you can’t find one where you live, check the nearest city or big town, there’s bound to be one within driving distance of where you live.

Recently a large bowling stadium was constructed in Reno, NV (United States). If you want to see a really large house, that is the place to go. If you get a chance to bowl there it is really quite the thing! I have bowled there on several occasions and have really enjoyed it. The PBA (Pro Bowlers Association, see Chapter 9) has tournaments there as well as the USBC. A few of the tournaments that I know of that bowl there are the PBA, USBC Nationals, USBC Mixed, and the High Roller. This stadium was built expressly for the purpose of handling large bowling tournaments, and is not allowed to have leagues in it. It also has a very large Pro Shop (place to buy bowling stuff), that even has a bowling lane in it so that you can see everything! They will video tape your game and help you to figure out what you need to improve. It is quite impressive.

Bowling Center Layout

Most bowling alleys will have a desk (where you buy games), a bar, game room, at least one meeting room, a room to handle babysitting, and, of course, lanes! A lot of houses have a pro shop also.

The desk is usually situated somewhere near the center of the house and the bar is usually not far from it. For most bowlers that’s all you need to know about a bowling alley right there! Drinking and bowling go hand and hand for a lot of bowlers (not me, though). It’s no mistake that the bar is centralized in the bowling alley. The game room is usually centralized in the bowling alley also, and most of the time contains pool tables, video games, and pinball machines.

Meeting rooms can be anywhere in the bowling alley, and will seat anywhere from 25 – 100s of people. The meeting rooms are used for league meetings, receptions, birthday parties, etc…. Most of the time, one of the rooms will have toys and things in it for kids. This room is generally used for babysitting the children of the bowlers. Most bowling alleys offer free babysitting for children up to age 7 or 8 for league bowlers. This comes in very handy when you are bowling.

Pro shops are very popular in bowling alleys. Inside of the pro shop you can find just about anything that you need for bowling from balls and bags to shoes, brushes, and powder or resin. You can even get advice from a “pro”. Most of the pro shops are either owned by a professional bowler or have a professional on staff. Be careful though, not all of the people working in the pro shop are pros, and not all of them necessarily have your best interest at heart. There is a lot of stuff to be bought and if you are getting equipment, be sure that you are speaking to somebody who knows your game. Buying equipment for bowling is not as simple as getting a ball and shoes (more on that in Chapter 3).

Who do I call?

The first person that you are likely to meet in the bowling alley is the desk person. This is the person behind the desk that will take your money and assign you a lane. This is also the person that is your main contact at the bowling alley should anything happen. If you spill a drink, your ball gets stuck in the return, or whatever… you should contact the desk person and let them know what you need.

League bowlers usually go through the league secretary to get things accomplished in the house. The league secretary usually has a little more clout than the individual bowler as he/she represents an entire league of bowlers (and therefore a lot of revenue to the bowling center).

There are two other people that you may encounter at the bowling alley. The Porter is the person cleaning up the lanes, getting dead balls, dead wood, fixing scores and just about anything else that needs to be done on the customer side of the lanes. The Mechanic is the other person that you may encounter. You probably won’t come into direct contact with them; they are the person that works in the back of the alley, resetting pins, fixing the machines, and making sure that things work right. They are usually the one that oils the lanes (more on that later), also.

Keep bowling and having fun!

Starting A Home Based Business And Internet Marketing

12 March, 2012 (05:16) | Uncategorized | By: admin

What you need to learn to start a Small Home Business.

There are employees who find themselves unhappy with their present employment situation, resign, and try to find other jobs that will suit their specific needs. Unfortunately, these individuals are now among the millions of Americans who are currently unemployed.

On the other hand, there are individuals who are just determined to earn not just enough but to strike it rich, and take the risk of starting a small home based business. They get out of the pressure of working on a stressful environment and enjoy the flexibility of their working hours. Although there are home base entrepreneurs who failed in their business venture, most individuals who started a small home base business continue their struggle, and luckily, generating substantial income before they realize that they do not need a regular job in the office to work with.

Why should I consider a small home based business opportunity?

However, there are instances wherein you come to think that the income you receive both from your regular and alternate work is still insufficient to compensate your expenditures given the fact that the prices of basic commodities and other necessities are consistently increasing. There is no chance that your salary will also increase every time the prices of basic commodities also increase.

It is your responsibility to sustain the needs of your family.

During those instances, there are employees who are brave enough to face the risk of getting into business. Thus, they retire from their previous work, collect the necessary cash benefits due to them, and use this as their starting capital for their business venture. Most of them get into home-based business and they start selling several merchandises to their neighbours and later selling such items to the business district within their locality.

That is why these employees are getting involved into home-based Internet marketing business. They clear some space inside their house that will serve as their “business office” (they also makes use of their bedrooms as offices) and purchase a single personal computer unit that is connected on the Internet. What they typically do is to surf on the Internet, research for several Internet-based earning opportunities that does not require huge starting capital, and learn the strategies needed to succeed in this type of program.

Home-based Businesses is on the increase.

How Important is to market my business properly?

Take a sneak peek on the following and determine what kind of promotion is best suited for your business. Internet marketing is distinguished from other types of business venture (such as the brick and mortar marketing) through its structures. Internet marketing structure is composed of several elements such as long and short term marketing strategies, direct and indirect branding market, traffic analysis, sales volume evaluation, and other relevant elements.

There is a need for every Internet marketer, whether a neophyte or an experienced one, to master the strategies of Internet marketing to get the right approach and be successful in their respective programs.

One of the secrets in obtaining effective marketing approaches is to learn and understand the basic structure of Internet marketing. For instance, you need to realize that there is a huge distinction between short term and long term marketing strategies in which the former is a “temporary approach” and the latter is a “permanent approach”.

Your site must appear on the top pages of every search engine results made by Internet users. Its rapid development, along with the clever minds of webmasters and Internet geniuses, paved the way for the innovations that changed the way we live in this world.

This is one of the effective marketing strategies used in online-based businesses. In case that you are getting negative results, there is a need to change your approach. Affiliate Marketing Programs Category.

It must provide a long-term focus; that is, earning money not just only today but to the coming years as well. Lastly, do not be deaf to the feedbacks and concerns expressed by your clients. However, you can also help building brand awareness of not well-known products or services that will help a lot in making your online advertising successful.

Internet is not just for pure information dissemination or transmission of useful data–it now changed the way we do business in the 21st century. Is there a vehicle without engine and wheels?? Take a course or spend time learning these techniques.

1. It is easy to promote products and services that are already well-known to the public rather than unbranded ones. Good decision, yet you need to know what can you expect when you take an Internet marketing course. There are many programs (both offline and online) that offers Internet marketing course, but the best course contains the best subjects that will serve as your guide on Internet marketing. Such subjects are as follows:

2. The course will start by discussing some basics of Internet marketing. Although it will not elaborate the history of the investment, it will include the basic opportunities on how you will be able to earn online without wasting your effort and financial resources.

3. Next in line is setting up your website. Keep in mind that on Internet marketing, your website will serve as your “shop” where you can sell products of other Internet marketers or promote something that will generate income on your part. The subject will include the appropriate website design templates to be used on a particular business, registering your site in its own domain name, and others.

4. Along with the course, expect that it will include several strategies on how you will be able to anticipate the moves of your competitors. Internet marketing is a growing market, and competition among Internet marketers is inevitable. Thus, there is a need for you to watch how your competitors move in order to stay alive in your chosen investment.

5. The course will also include subjects related to website promotion through the use of online classified ads, press releases, newsletters, emails, newsgroups, and others. Keep in mind that your website must be as popular as possible so that you will be able to attract more clients. Promoting your website as your product is very critical on Internet marketing, and it is one of the subjects that would be discussed extensively.

It is natural that you will spend some of your money in taking an Internet marketing course. Keep in mind that in order to succeed, you must have the necessary knowledge and skills that will help you reach your market.

Furthermore, it is not just selling a certain product to online shoppers. Affiliate links work best in the context of the information contained within the website. ” Although the structure is considered to be as the “basic outline”, there are instances wherein due to changing market conditions and other external factors, there is a need to change some parts of the structure either to remove or add several elements.

The present structure of Internet marketing is now one of the better if not the best structures among all existing investments. There are additional elements that are now considered to be the “ultimate lifeline” of the online business industry.

o THE FOUNDER- you are one of the important elements of an Internet marketing structure. The business will not be successful if you will not stand up and lead your business to the right path. Remember that the Internet has its own “dungeons”–and it is where you need to shine and break the darkness to become successful on your Internet marketing career.

o THE PRODUCT- if you do not have a product to sell, do you think you will be able to grab a slice of the Internet marketing revenue pie?

Although you have an excellent Internet marketing business opportunity, but if you do not have a marketing plan for developing such opportunity, there is a slim chance that you will be successful.

How do you market a small home based business.

Although classified ads is the designated part for such endorsements, you will still find several product and service endorsements on the front page, sports page, and even on the comics section of the newspaper. Structure is an integral part of their being–without it, their being and purpose is not complete.

If you think that the structure is just for physical attributes alone, then you need to think again.

As a matter of fact, abstract things also need structure in order to survive. And Internet marketing does need a specific structure.

In what way? Why is important to get the structure right?

Once the brand is consistently patronized by the people, you will be able to achieve success and your products will certainly have an edge over unbranded products. This will influence the way they patronize your products or services that may even result in the expansion of your clientele base.

There exist wide range of advertising-related and consultancy services based on market conditions, advance sales strategies, and popular culture. As previously mentioned, you do not need to secure necessary permits from city or state governments or find premises for your business. It was a simple idea.

Some merchants run their own affiliate programs while others use third party services provided by intermediaries to track traffic or sales that are referred from affiliates.

It is irrelevant (for the compensation) how often an Ad is displayed.

If you have your mailing list, you must have an auto responder service. If you don’t yet you will soon, it’s part of internet marketing. Some advertisers however did and still do embrace this behaviour of their affiliates and allow them, even encourage them, to bid on any term they like, including the advertisers trademarks.

Depending on the kind of Internet marketing business you are into as well as your subscriber’s level of interest, the appropriate volume for you could be weekly or monthly. SEO, or the search engine optimization, is a proven online advertising method, and presently in-demand. The choice is yours to make.

It is an online-based exchange agency that serves as an intermediary between buyers and sellers in making business transactions (particularly business-to-business transactions, hence the term B2B applies).

All other effective strategies will come in line as long as you stick to the basic yet the best strategies in your Internet marketing venture. Remember that your ultimate goal is to be a successful Internet marketer who continues to generate revenues on an upscale. Many affiliate programs were poorly managed. But don’t let that worry you because with time vendors are getting better.

Once the selected brand name is still available, It is a unique system that allows you to collect commissions on your own sales as well as individuals you recruited. Those are the key features that you need to watch out when deciding on which Internet marketing business you will engage into.

Advertising your products or services for sale through the Internet is relatively cheaper than advertising through local newspapers and large billboards. Develop you own product. Or better still you can JV with an established vendor and collect regular commission cheques by promoting their products. One popular method is Pay Per Click search engine traffic. Also known as “google adword” More information can be found by visiting the links below.

Health Insurance Basics – Common Definitions and Tips For First Time Buyers

12 March, 2012 (02:12) | Uncategorized | By: admin

Choosing a health insurance plan that is right for your family can be a bit daunting…but it doesn’t have to be. Becoming familiar with the different health insurance plans that are available both for individuals and families will help you navigate the health care insurance field and make an better informed decision concerning health insurance. Read on to learn some of the health insurance basics.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST INSURANCE PLAN FOR YOUR NEEDS

First, determine if short term or long term health insurance is what you need. If you are unemployed, yet hope to be hired in a few months with a company that offers group insurance, than perhaps short term health insurance is for you. Also some companies require a new employee to work for three to six months before they are eligible for health benefits. Short term could offer the temporary coverage you need. Next, decide if basic health-care coverage or comprehensive health care coverage will better meet your needs.

BASIC HEALTH CARE COVERAGE

This plans covers inpatient hospitalization and out-patient surgery in case of a major accident or illness. The monthly health premiums are lower and are generally the choice for those who are primarily interested in coverage in case of severe accident or illness.

COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE

This plan covers preventative care, Dr’s visits, prescriptions, along with hospitalizations and out-patient surgery. Comprehensive health care coverage has a higher monthly premium, and it generally has a low co-pay at the time of a Dr’s appointment. This plan may be the better choice appropriate for those who have reoccurring medical expenses.

AVAILABLE INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY INSURANCE PLANS

Health care plans usually fall into two categories, indemnity or managed-care plans. They differ in regard to how bills are paid, ability to choose health care providers and out-of pocket expenses. Generally, you’ll have a broader choice of health care providers with indemnity health-care plans and less out-of -pocket expenses and less paperwork with a managed-care health insurance plan.

MANAGED CARE PLANS

HMO’s (Health Maintenance Organizations), PPO’s

(Preferred Provider Organizations), and POS’s (Point of Service Plans) are all managed health-care insurance plans.

INDEMNITY PLANS

Under this plan, insurance companies pay their share of the cost for services after they receive a bill. This may mean that you will have to pay your bill for medical care at the time of service and then seek reimbursement from your health insurance company.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF AN HMO PLAN?

- Lower out of the pocket expenses

- Fewer choices in regard to physicians and hospitals than other health insurance plans

- A PCP (Primary Care Physician) is required and will meet most of your health-care needs

- A referral is needed from your PCP before seeing a specialist

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF A PPO PLAN?

- Health insurance companies offer a network of preferred doctors and hospitals

- These health care providers offer the members services at discounted rates

- Usually an annual individual or family deductible must be paid before the health insurance companies begins to pay out money for medical bills.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF A POS?

- Combines features of both the HMO and PPO plans

- Members are usually required to choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP)

- PCP services are not usually subject to a deductible

- Preventative care visits are generally covered

HEALTH INSURANCE TERMS

As with any genre, health care insurance is filled with jargon exclusive to its field. The following is a list of terms and their meanings that will hopefully give you good grasp of health insurance terms.

COINSURANCE

The percentage of medical costs you have to paying after meeting the deductible amount that is attached to your plan.

CO-PAYMENT

This occurs under an HMO plan and requires a specified dollar amount be paid to the health insurance provider on each visit.

COVERED BENEFITS

A covered benefit must always be a medical necessity. The determination of whether something is a medical necessity or not is made by the health insurance company.

DEDUCTIBLE

The amount you must pay in medical expenses before your insurance company will begin to cover your medical bills.

DEPENDENT

A dependent is someone other than yourself who is covered under your health insurance plan. This could include a spouse, child, unmarried partner. For children there are age limits at which they are no longer covered under a parent’s health policy.

DISABILITY

In the event that you are unable to work for an extended period of time due to an injury or a medical condition, disability insurance provides funds to cover your living expenses in a specified amount.

GATEKEEPER

Another title for your Primary Care Provider (PCP)

GROUP INSURANCE

Employers often offer group insurance plans. Under group insurance an employee can generally obtain a much more affordable plan.

IN NETWORK/OUT OF NETWORK

In network refers to those physicians who have been contracted under a health care plan to provide services to their members. Staying in network allows lower charges and a smaller percentage of out of pocket expenses. Conversely, going out of network generally means charges are higher and you will have to pay a greater percentage of out of pocket expenses.

GRACE PERIOD

This is a specified period past the due date of a premium during which coverage may not be canceled. This prevents health insurance companies from canceling your policy if payment should arrive a few days late.

OPEN-ENROLLMENT PERIOD

Generally, this is a once-a-year period of time that allows you to make changes to your existing health insurance coverage. (A change in marriage status or the birth of a child also allows you to modify your health insurance plan.

PRE-CERTIFICATION(Pre-authorization)

Before surgery or hospitalization, the insurance company must be contacted to get approval for a medical service to take place. Failure to do so typically means the insurance company will NOT pay for the service. This does not apply in an emergency situation, although the insurance company should be contacted as soon as possible.

PRE-EXISTING CONDITION

A medical condition that existed before an insurance policy became effective. Most insurance companies require a three month to one year waiting period before a pre-existing condition can be covered under their plan.

PREMIUMS

Monthly payments for insurance coverage. Monthly payments can easily reach $100 for singles and two to three times that amount for a family.

REFERRAL

A written form from your Primary Care Provider to another Dr. (usually a specialist) giving consent for you to go to them for medical services.

SECOND SURGERY OPINION

On occasion an insurance company will ask you to be seen by a second Dr. to determine if the recommended procedure is necessary or if an alternate method could accomplish the same result.

URC (Usual, reasonable, and customary)

URC refers to the dollar amount an insurer will usually pay for a service or procedure based on what is customary for the area in which you live. An insurance company will not pay $800 for a procedure that costs only $300.

HEALTH INSURANCE QUOTES

Be sure that you shop around to find the best health insurance plan. Compare quotes from at least 3-5 different insurance companies before you decide to purchase.

Personalized Childrens Furniture Can Be Fun and Easy to Create

12 March, 2012 (01:21) | Uncategorized | By: admin

Personalised children’s furniture is one way to make truly one of a kind pieces for your child. Even if you are not artistic, this process can be simple, fun, easy and you and your child will be thrilled at the results. Perhaps you have been avoiding doing any personalising of the furniture because you are concerned that it is too difficult. If this is the case, try some of the simple suggestions below:

* At a craft store buy the unfinished wooden letters that spell out your child’s name. Using their favorite colors, paint the letters either solid colors or make patterns. After painting finish with a clear coat of varnish to add sheen. Glue the letters using a hot glue gun or wood glue onto the surface of mirror frames, dressers or headboards.

* Wooden cut out designs or silhouettes can be painted and added to any piece of furniture. Pick designs that reflect your child’s hobbies or interests. If they are sports fans team logos, favorite players numbers or other team images can be used.

* Stenciling is an easy way to become an instant artist. Simply purchase a stencil that your child likes, and then, using a stencil glue, spray the back of the stencil. Press it gently against the surface you wish to stencil on. Using a stencil brush, gently fill in the stencil area with the desired colors. Carefully remove the stencil by pulling straight off the surface.

* For many young girls glass “gems” and other silver or gold looking flat beads add style and fashion to mirror edges or picture frames. This look is simple and will only require the items to be added with a hot glue gun. Children can help but will need supervision and should not use the glue gun themselves.

* Art wire can also be used to add details. It can be twisted or twirled to make a pattern across the furniture and then glued on with a glue gun or other spray type adhesive.

* Geometric patterns can be used to personalize items. Simply pick a shape or two and paint them onto the surface. It is great to use contrasting colors and outline the shapes in black to really make them stand out.

* Small inch-by-inch tiles can be used to make a patterned headboard, dresser top or table top for your child’s room. Use colors that are favorites to personalize the furniture. Patterns can be made by simply placing different colored tiles on the surface. It is a good idea to lay out the tiles first before gluing them to the furniture so that any changes that need to be made can be easily done.

* Pictures of the child or the family can be placed on a tabletop or desk area and then covered with a layer of plexiglass or glass. The cover can then be attached to the table or desk with clamps. The great advantage of using clamps is that they can be easily removed and the pictures changed as the child ages or as new photos become available.

Personalising your child’s furniture is a fun and easy activity that anyone can do. Children often have great ideas about how to decorate their furniture, and enjoy working together with the family to create one of a kind items for their room.

Secrets Of A Professional Dog Trainer – Detailed Book Review

12 March, 2012 (00:49) | Uncategorized | By: admin

Secrets Of A Professional Dog Trainer was put together by leading professional dog trainer Adam Katz. He states that this book is his attempt to bring together all of the latest tricks, tips and crafts of the dog training profession, and make them accessible to the ordinary dog owner. In doing this I believe he has created the best do-it-yourself dog training system available today.

Secrets Of A Professional Dog Trainer is the most complete dog ownership and obedience training resource I have come across. This book and the bonuses that come with it have changed the way I think about dog training – and no doubt for the better. If you follow Adam’s cutting edge techniques, like I have, you’ll come away with so much more than just a “well trained dog”.

What You Get In The Package

Secrets Of A Professional Dog Trainer Book

This is the main book in the package, when downloaded it’s 151 pages chock full of the

best dog ownership and obedience training information I have seen in any one book. The

book isn’t slick or glossy with lots of pretty pictures, it’s just a great resource of

the latest cutting edge and useable dog training techniques. There is so much to take in and

understand that you will probably need to read through the book at least a couple of times (I still find new things each time I flick through my copy).

The book covers in precise detail every imaginable aspect of dog ownership and is presented

in a no-nonsense, take it or leave it style. Adam gets away with writing in this syle because he has an absolute confidence in his training methods which is based on years of experience and proven real-world results.

I can’t go into too much detail and give away Adam’s secrets, but I’ll just highlight some of

the many topics which are covered. These are just some of the principles I found to be crucial when working with my dogs:

  • How to achieve a proper relationship with your puppy or older dog, based on trust and
    respect.

  • The overriding principle of this package it to praise or reward your dog when he does something you like, and correct his behavior when he does something you don’t like (sounds simple but you need to know the right way to do this).
  • Shows you how to work with the natural drives and instincts of your dog (this is crucial to understand and follow).
  • Explains the 3 keys to successful dog training and behavior modification – the first key is “timing”.
  • Details the three phases of dog training or the dog learning process.
  • Shows you how to communicate with your dog so that your dog understands your commands and those same commands have meaning.
  • Explains the top four way to effectively communicate with your dogs. You achieve this
through replicating how dogs communicate with each other.

  • Explains why you the dogs owner are the best person in the world to train your dog.

Dog problems are universal – the good news is so are the answers to these problems.

If you read, understand and then apply the above principles you are pretty much set. All of

your dog training needs can be addressed by adapting these methods to any situation, whether

you are trying to correct a behavioral problem or teach a new trick.

Some of the specific Lessons and Topics discussed within the book – again I can’t go into too much detail here but let me assure you Adam leaves his readers in no doubt about what to do and what not to do in all of these scenarios:

  • How to choose the right puppy or older dog for you and your family.
  • What your puppy needs at each crucial stage while growing up.
  • Tells you how professional trainers raise their own pups.
  • How to take any dog for a walk on a loose leash.
  • How to perform and hold a perfect down-stay.
  • How to prevent or fix canine aggression.
  • Stop your dogs excessive barking.
  • Five secrets to quickly housebreak (potty train) your puppy.
  • The truth about crate training.
  • Stop your dog jumping forever.
  • The problem with clicker training.
  • Which collar is right for your dog.
  • Stop your dog digging.
  • Stop your puppy biting now.
  • How to stop your dog running away from you.
  • How to fix separation anxiety.
  • How to teach your dog hand signals.
  • Socializing your dogs.
  • Training with and electronic collar.
  • How to give a motivational correction.

The above list of common dog problems barely scratches the surface of what’s included in this book. You’ll find the book addresses all area’s of dog ownership including building a strong relationship with your dog, obedience training and correcting any behavioral problems.

What Adam is really doing in this book is training us the reader, so we can then go and bond with and train our dogs – the right way.

Bonus 1 – Eight Secrets To Becoming The “Alpha Dog”

This proved to be the most beneficial part of the package for me and my dogs. Once I learned and applied the techniques covered in this bonus book everything else I did with my dogs seemed to become easier. Whether I was teaching them a new trick or correcting a behavioral problem, the process seemed to be easier and quicker after we established that I was the Alpha Dog. As Adam outlines in the book (you can also listen to it as an audio file) when you become the Alpha Dog your dogs do these four things:

  • Quickly respond to you.
  • Respect you in any situation.
  • Bond with you in the proper way.
  • Really want to please you.

This occurs because dogs naturally love to have a leader (you the Alpha Dog). They are

happiest when they’ve got a good strong leader, who they know will take care of them and that

they trust.

Bonus 2 – How To Fix Aggression Problems In Dogs

Again this section is available to learn in printed form or as an audio file (I actually

learned these lessons on the train, on my way to work listening to my ipod). This section of

Secrets Of A Professional Dog Trainer clearly defines the four main causes or types of dog

aggression.
Adam really digs deep into how to correctly diagnose and fix these aggression

problems. He reveals one simple technique that he has used to fix 90% of the aggression

problems
he encountered at his dog training school. What I learnt in this section is that it is the way we communicate with our dogs that is essential to correcting this problem – we

must be on the same page as our dogs.

Bonus 3 – How To Teach Any Dog To Walk On A Loose Leash In Less Than 10 Minutes!

The title says it all really. Adam spells out exactly what to do to stop your dog pulling

on the leash
. These techniques work a treat. I’ve got to say it did take me and Pocky (my

whippet) a little longer than 10 minutes to master this skill, but we got there before long.

Bonus 4 – Free $25 E-mail Consultation With Adam

This is a great bonus. if you do decide to go ahead and purchase this package be sure to use

this service. Any specific problems you come across when training your dogs you can get the

answer to here. Also be aware that you will receive free access to heaps of training tips and

advice on Adam’s website. This includes an active forum you can read and participate in (there’s some brilliant tips to be found on this site).

Bonus 5 – How To Choose A Veterinarian

Unfortunately, as dog owners there will be times we need to call on the services of a good Vet. This book outlines some important factors to consider when making this decision. These points are general and apply to all dog owners, regardless of what part of the world you are in.

Bonus 6 – Where To Buy Dog Products At Wholesale Prices

Lists some very cheap suppliers of dog care and training products. This part of the package is most useful to residents of the U.S.A.

Bonus 7 – Dog Training Internet Resource File

This is another good little bonus. It’s an exhaustive list of dog training related web sites,

registries, mailing lists, breeders, kennels, products, articles and information. You’ll find

some real gems amongst this lot.

My Experience Using Secrets Of A Professional Dog Trainer

When I first set out to find a suitable do-it-yourself dog training system, this system is really what I hoped to find. It took me a while to wade through lots of the junk products out there, but it was worth it.

Of all the products I have tested, this one is clearly my personal favorite. It is by far

the most comprehensive and insightful product of its kind. Every stage and thinkable

situation of a dogs life is expertly addressed by Adam.

What Type Of Dog Owner Would Benefit Most From Secrets Of A Professional Dog Trainer?

I’ve recommended this package to many friends who are first time dog owners, I’d be just as

comfortable recommending it to Professional Dog Trainers. All dog owners (and their dogs)

would benefit from learning and applying Adam’s cutting edge training methods. He is the

leading authority on how to properly bond with and obedience train any puppy or dog.

Public Speaking – Instructional Books, Tapes, DVDs and Big Empty Promises

11 March, 2012 (04:44) | Uncategorized | By: admin

Can you imagine Bill’s surprise when his Super Duper Magical Public Speaking in a Box program told him “walk out to the podium with confidence!”… No! Really? Bill already knew that he needed to walk to the podium with confidence- what he hoped to learn was how to do that. Confidence is not something that is easily faked and for Bill, who was scared to death of public speaking, this was no easy task. The program that he paid a hefty sum for told him all of the things that he already knew he should do and did nothing to help him do it.

Bill’s complaint to the marketer of that product was met with discouragement. Bill was essentially told that if the program did not work for him, then he was likely not cut out for public speaking.

Was it true? I don’t think so. But I know something that the floggers of ‘public speaker wares’ will not tell you. Public speaking skill is one of those things we all have to learn by doing it.

Consider this for a moment: Would you earn a black belt in the martial art of your choice by watching DVDs? Would you purchase a series of cassette tapes to learn to ride a motorcycle? Would you trust a carpenter whose highest credential was that he had read a book on home renovations? You get the point. Doing kind-of-skill requires doing kind-of-learning.

Effective, dynamic, engaging public speaking ability can be acquired by anyone but we all have to learn to do it the way that the effective, dynamic and engaging public speakers did. If we have challenges to overcome, we will have to overcome them like accomplished speakers did (and you can believe that many of them did)

If time is not an issue for you and you are looking at public speaking as a bit of a hobby, you can do several things:

1) Study speakers that you enjoy listening to (comedians, talk show hosts, news broadcasters) and analyze how they speak, how they time their delivery, how they deliver a punch line, how they pace themselves. As you pick out things that they do, make an effort to imitate their techniques when you speak in groups of friends, in board meetings etc;

2) Seek out and take every opportunity to speak;

3) Analyze your own public speaking. Decide what you can improve on and make a plan to make changes the next time you speak.

4) Don’t get hung up on not being an expert speaker. Chances are, nobody is expecting you to be.

5) Once you have gained some confidence, if you have a chance to video tape yourself speaking in front of a group or audience, do it! You will learn allot from watching yourself from the audience members perspective.

If you do not have the luxury of taking your time and view public speaking skills as something you need as soon as possible, you will do well to invest in attending public speaking workshops with an experienced professional who can offer you guidance based upon your needs and abilities.

Be cautious of “workshops” that are in reality a sales pitch for tapes, DVDs or books. Workshops should be just that. They should provide guidance and instruction while providing you with hands on experience. I have heard stories of disappointment from many people who attended sessions which were conducted under a well known name and after these people had paid significant sums of money to attend, they learned very little other than the secret to their success was in the program they were given the privilege and special opportunity to purchase.

Workshops and seminars that have too many participants might suggest that there is greater focus on maximizing fees instead of on really helping individuals to become better public speakers. Look for workshops that limit participants to a reasonable number based on the focus of the sessions. In general, and depending on the purpose of the workshop, 10 to 15 would be the ideal maximum. Smaller groups ensure that the workshops focus is on working with you to maximize your progress.

Anyone can be a great public speaker with a little effective guidance and regular opportunity to develop public speaking skills. If your Super Duper Magical Public Speaking in a Box program failed to make you the greatest public speaker in the universe take this to heart: It is a crummy instructor who blames his student.

La Velle Goodwin is a former professional level member of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers. She is an effective educator who focuses 20+ years of public speaking, entertainment, teaching and training experience into public speaker coaching and training.

With her unique style and quick wit, La Velle assists aspiring public speakers tap into their strengths and become confident presenters and experienced speakers to become truly great! By targeting specific areas, working with individual learning styles and tailoring workshops specifically for the individual participants, Goodwin skillfully guides even the most nervous and awkward to levels of ability that seemed impossible for them at the start.

“Anyone can be a really great public speaker… you just have to find the on switch”

You Don’t Have to Suffer These Effects of Fear of Cooking

11 March, 2012 (02:15) | Uncategorized | By: admin

In my last blog post, I explained the 5 signs of the fear of cooking that many people suffer from in deciding that they would like to learn to cook. Because the kitchen plays a particularly important emotional role in many people’s lives, not knowing how to cook can have devastating effects. Some people that have come to me to learn to cook have told me stories that not only explain their fear of cooking but have made it almost impossible for them to learn how to cook.

One of the ways that fear of cooking is intensified is through smells. Your sense of smell has a powerful links to your memories. In fact, I’m sure that most of you have memories that come flooding into your mind when you smell cookies baking or a pot roast. I have strong memories when I smell the chlorine from a pool that remind me of swimming and snack bar hamburgers.

Memories are not always positive. For example, I had one woman that came to my cooking school and told me that she can’t cook. Later in the evening as she was learning how to cook (funny how well cooking by method works), she explained to me that as a child, every time she went into the kitchen, her mother would scream, “Get out of the kitchen. You’re going to mess everything up. You’re going to ruin things. This is not a place for children.” No wonder she had a fear of cooking!

Let’s look a little more deeply into the 10 ways that the fear of cooking may affect your life

  1. Anxiety – this can come from the thought of the “impending” meal and not knowing what to cook or how to cook.
  2. Depression - eating the same things over and over again can cause depression and place a person in a lull where they lose the desire to learn to cook.
  3. Lethargy - most often this comes from eating foods that aren’t good for us. In particular, eating empty calories or fast food over and over again.
  4. Embarrassment - are you the person that always brings napkins to the pot luck? Not knowing how to cook can cause embarrassment when you never bring a meal to gatherings.
  5. Loneliness - eating home cooked meals has the potential to bring families together. Without home cooked meals, there may be a sense of loneliness because so much conversation and socializing occurs over a cooked meal.
  6. Non-Reciprocation – Have you been invited to dinner by your friends multiple times and never returned the favor? This can cause a feeling of being a “deadbeat”.
  7. Poor provider – Not knowing how to cook can lead to a lack of variety for your family and feeling guilty from not feeding your children healthy foods.
  8. Taker/not giver – Always depending on your spouse or partner to cook for you can make you feel like a taker and never being able to give back to the cook in the family.
  9. Spend-thrift - Do you have kitchen gadget that were gifts or purchased that you don’t know how to use? Do you have a multi-thousand dollar range that makes popcorn? This type of guilt can intensify the fear of cooking.
  10. Money stress – When one has a fear of cooking and doesn’t learn how to cook, there is a tendency to spend more money on take-out foods which can cause anxiety around money and cooking

You don’t have to suffer these effects of the fear of cooking! These are exactly the types of feelings and thoughts that drive me to continue to help people to understand how easy it is to learn to cook using simple cooking method. Having an understanding of how foods go together without using a recipe can not only make the fear of cooking go away, but will enable you to cook anytime anywhere with confidence. You will not only know how to cook but will never suffer from the devastating effects of the fear of cooking again!

Internet Marketing for Lawyers – Advice That Counts

28 February, 2012 (00:58) | Uncategorized | By: admin

Lawyers face the same challenges any business does. In order to get new business they must market their services, i.e., advertise. And lawyers deal with the same marketing and advertising challenge every business does – how to beat the competition. Plus lawyers have to assume that any Internet or non-Internet marketing or advertising they do may well produce little or no results for the amount of time and money they spend — regardless of what an outside marketing or advertising advisor may say to the contrary.

Prior to the Internet the main non-Internet marketing option or advertising choice for any lawyer was to advertise in the yellow pages. To this day the print yellow pages contain plenty of colorful, one page display ads that feature lawyers offering their services, and lawyers pay a lot for these ads. How effective these ads are is anyone’s guess — it’s hard for your colored, one page display ad to stand out when you have 20 other lawyers doing the exact same thing! The yellow pages companies, however, continue to promote their marketing and advertising philosophy that “bigger is always better” and “everything we sell is an opportunity,” so they often present a lawyer with a non-Internet marketing and advertising solution that costs plenty but often produces little.

This line of thinking, along with the use of print yellow pages in general, has gone the way of the dinosaur at a very accelerated pace. The yellow pages in print form had their heyday for many decades, but the population now goes to the Internet for the information they seek, so most print directories are collecting dust. A lawyer who advertises in the print yellow pages may well get calls, but they’ll most likely be from vendors using the yellow pages as a cheap source of leads.

The major paid search providers (pay per click search engines) tend to offer lawyers Internet marketing and advertising solutions in a manner similar to the way the yellow pages do with their print directories. “Bigger is always better,” so rather than realistically discuss with a lawyer a pay per click Internet marketing and advertising campaign that makes financial sense and produces a decent ROI, the pay per click providers will tell the lawyer to go for as many top listing keywords (the most expensive) as their budget will permit and bid as high as they can. The lawyer may go broke in the process, but at least they’ll get exposure! Many lawyers get into pay per click as a quick way to get leads but quickly exit a month later after spending lots of money for Internet marketing and advertising results that produce nothing but expense.

While pay per click Internet marketing and advertising is the running favorite of Internet marketing advertisers worldwide, pay per click advertising for a lawyer is usually an extremely expensive proposition for what they get. How much a lawyer is willing to “pay for a lead” takes on a whole new meaning with pay per click. The cost per click for many lawyer related keywords, e.g., “personal injury lawyer,” “criminal defense lawyer,” can range from $5.00 to $70.00 per click depending on the market, and when the typical lawyer’s conversion rate (the number of clicks it takes to generate a lead) of one to two percent is factored in, the lawyer can find themselves paying upwards of $500.00 to $7,000.00 per lead, and a lead is not a client.

Part of the problem lawyers face when they work with pay per click (and this translates directly into poor conversion rates) is that (1) they spend little time creating their pay per click ads and (2) the ads direct traffic to the lawyer’s website. Any Internet marketing professional who knows something about pay per click knows you never send pay per click traffic to a website. Instead you create special pages, i.e., “landing pages” for pay per click traffic to be directed to. The landing pages perform the job of convincing traffic to do what the lawyer requires, which is normally to contact the lawyer via e-mail or by phone.

Legal Internet directories and portals offer the lawyer a potential Internet marketing and advertising option because of their popularity and enhanced Internet visibility. How effective a listing in a legal Internet directory or portal can be for a lawyer in terms of marketing, advertising and Internet exposure will depend upon the particular attributes of the legal Internet directory or portal in question. All things being equal, legal Internet directories or portals that charge a fee to be listed in them make more sense as an Internet marketing and advertising choice than similar sites that offer listings for free. The lawyer has to be particularly careful, however, when they consider advertising in legal Internet directories and portals that “look” like they offer a lot — and a price to go with it — but for whatever reasons simply do not produce enough leads for the amount of Internet marketing and advertising money the lawyer must spend.

Many legal Internet directories and portals exist that have a very strong Internet presence, and they are excellent resource centers for lawyers, but this does not automatically make them good places to advertise. With Internet legal portals especially it’s not how many lawyers the portal attracts but how many people the Internet legal portal attracts who are searching for legal services. People have paid thousands of dollars for advertising in Internet legal portals that have produced nothing in the way of Internet marketing and advertising results. A very wise idea for any lawyer who considers advertising in an Internet legal portal is to get some very accurate user demographics on what kind of specific traffic the Internet legal portal is actually attracting.

What is a lawyer supposed to do? Everywhere the lawyer looks, whether the marketing and advertising media is Internet or non-Internet, considerable financial risk is involved, and a guarantee that the lawyer will get good, solid results for the amount of money they spend is often hard to achieve.

Ultimately the best way for a lawyer to go with Internet marketing and advertising – the way that will ultimately get them the best long term results for the money they spend — is to focus on getting their website to rank high in organic search results. When all things are considered, people on the Internet who search for goods and services mainly search for websites to find their answers. They may look to legal Internet directories and portals, and if they don’t find what they want they may turn to pay per click listings as a last resort (only about 30% to 40% of users bother with pay per click) but ultimately people who search the Internet are looking for websites that provide them with the answers they seek.

If a lawyer is looking for an Internet marketing and advertising solution that doesn’t require being part of the pay per click crowd, the lawyer may want to look into pay per phone call programs. Pay per phone call is like pay per click, but the lawyer does not pay for a call unless they receive one. And the costs for pay per phone call are normally substantially less that what the lawyer will pay for a click in many cases. A smart lawyer may even want to consider getting involved with several pay per phone call providers with the idea that between the providers the lawyer will receive enough leads in the aggregate to make involvement with these programs worth it.

Many of the Internet marketing and advertising solutions that a lawyer chooses to look into must be tried on a case by case basis. Absolutely nothing can be assumed. A pay per click advertising campaign that works extremely well for the lawyer with one search provider might fail miserably with another.

One last thing that a lawyer should be aware of when it comes to the Internet and a website presence is that appearances really do count. Many people have been on the Internet for 10 years and have correspondingly seen websites of all types and styles. People are used to seeing professionally designed websites. The lawyer’s website should be too.
